Musala peak in Rila Mountain is the highest peak both in Bulgaria and on the entire Balkan Peninsula.
It is 2925 m high and 8 meters ahead of Mitikas peak (1917 m) in the Greek Mount Olympus.
In third place, with 11 meters down, remains another Bulgarian leader - Vihren peak (1914 m) in Pirin.

Musala Peak is located in Eastern Rila, surrounded on three sides by lake cirques - the Musalensky cirque (from the north), the Marishka Valley from the south and the valley of the Beli Iskar River from the west.

This granite peak is an impressive sight for anyone who walks between the walls of the rock range. Access to Mount Musala is attractive. The steep cliffs press us from all sides, but the crystal lakes along the route warm the connection between man and nature. From the top there are impressive views in all directions.

Below the highest peak of the Balkans is the deepest valley of the peninsula - the valley of the Beli Iskar river. Below our feet is the Ice Lake, along with the pyramidal shape of the shelter of the same name. It is the first of the seven Musalen Lakes that go down to the valley of the Bistrica River, and the view of it is unique.

The highest weather station in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula is built on the top, which in winter is completely covered with snow and for such cases a separate entrance is built through its roof. In snowy winter conditions, it offers shelter to mountaineers.

The two largest rivers in Bulgaria - Iskar and Maritsa - originate from the area of Mount Musala.

Don't let the summer heat fool you and take outerwear in Rila, as the average temperature in August is +5.3 °C. The highest temperature ever measured on Mount Musala is +18.7 °C, which is autumn or spring, depending on how optimistic you are about life. At the other pole are the winter temperatures. On average, February is -12 °C, and the lowest thermometers hit -31.2 °C. In summary, all this makes an annual average of -2.9 °C, which makes it the coldest place in Bulgaria. The snow cover here lasts for about 8 months and is more than a meter thick most of the time.
